In a united stand against illegal drugs, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 8, in partnership with the City Government of Catbalogan and the Samar Provincial Government, led the 2025 observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) on June 26, 2025, held at the Samar Convention Center, Catbalogan City.
Carrying the global theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention, Break the Cycle,” the event brought together national agencies, local government units, youth groups, barangay officials, and civil society organizations to underscore the importance of proactive and preventive approaches in the fight against illegal drugs.
The celebration featured engaging advocacy sessions and interactive presentations spearheaded by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and youth organization SIRAK Kabataan. These activities were specifically designed to empower the youth and grassroots communities with information on the dangers of drug use and the value of rehabilitation, reintegration, and community-based solutions.
DILG Samar Provincial Director Judy L. Batulan, speaking on behalf of DILG Region 8 Regional Director Arnel M. Agabe, delivered a keynote message reaffirming the agencyโs commitment to creating safe, resilient, and drug-free communities across Eastern Visayas. He emphasized that while the government continues to provide frameworks and support systems, real success hinges on sustained partnerships, public awareness, and community action.
Further reinforcing this message, RD Agabe earlier stated during the 2nd Quarter ICAD Advocacy Cluster Meeting, “The public is a powerful asset in our anti-drug campaign. When citizens come forward with information and work hand-in-hand with law enforcement and local authorities, it becomes a shared advocacyโone that safeguards our youth, restores lives, and protects our future.”
The event’s success was a result of seamless coordination among DILG Region 8, DILG Samar Provincial Office, Catbalogan City LGU, and the Samar Provincial Government. Their collaboration demonstrates the critical role of interagency synergy and community engagement in advancing inclusive, long-term anti-drug solutions.
As the region continues to confront the persistent threats posed by illegal drugs, DILG Region 8 urges citizens, youth, and community leaders to remain vigilant, informed, and engaged.
Let us stand united in breaking the cycle of drug abuse. Support local prevention programs, report illegal activities, and be an advocate for a healthy, drug-free Eastern Visayas. Together, we can build communities where every individualโespecially the youthโcan thrive in safety and dignity.
